Barry Harris method harks back to what was in use before the advent of George Russell’s scale classification system, contained in the famous publication “Lydian Chromatic. Concept of Tonal Organization ”of 1953, and before the founding of the modern Berklee School in Boston which will strongly apply Russell's new approach.
Barry Harris experienced firsthand the great transformations of the jazz language during the success of bebop and translated the theoretical and practical elements that were the basis of that transformation into a personal didactic organization.
Harris organizes the tonal system by placing the sixth chord and the octophonic scales with the diminished sixth as the basis for the melodic and harmonic construction, in continuity with Arnold Schönberg's discourse on diminished ones or how they were used by Chopin.
